What is a Bowie and Dick (B & D) Test Pack?

A Bowie and Dick Test Pack is used to test the autoclave. B&D tests were designed specifically to test vacuum steam steriliser's ability to:

• Efficiently perform vacuum operations.
• Remove air from the sterilisation chamber.
• Ascertain if there are any air flow leaks.

During an autoclave cycle, all air is removed from the sterilisation chamber and then replaced.

Who Uses B & D Test Packs?

Dental surgeries and doctors most commonly use B&D test packs to ensure their autoclave is sterilising instruments correctly - as per the relevant Australian and Industry Standards.

How do you Use a B & D Test Pack?

These B&D test packs are simple and easy to use. Simply place the entire unopened pack into the chamber and start the Bowie and Dick test cycle. Most autoclaves have a preset Bowie and Dick program. At the end of the cycle the indicators (that look like targets) will change colour to show a successful test.
